In the late 1950s, Don Condee ventured into the radio station business in the St. Louis area, which led to winter trips to Florida, facilitated by advertising tradeouts. These trips eventually connected him to Marco Island through a high school friend, Ed Husted, who was selling lots there. By the mid-1960s, Don had bought property on Marco and was exploring business opportunities, leading to the establishment of Condee Cooling and Electric on the island in 1969. Despite the challenges of managing a business remotely, Don's entrepreneurial spirit thrived, and he ensured the company's success by catering to the community's needs, especially in emergency situations. Over the years, this family-owned and operated business grew to employ around 45 people, including multiple generations of the Condee family. Beyond his business endeavors, Don's life was rich with personal interests, such as boating and deep sea fishing, and he maintained a strong community presence through the family-owned Condee Restaurant in Mount Sterling, Illinois.
